WBP - Clare Savidge

As Paul had made no specific wishes for his final resting place, Clare felt it was important to lay her brother to rest in an environment that embraced his values and the things he enjoyed.

After searching for somewhere special enough for Paul, Clare discovered the woodland cemetery just outside Epping – Epping Forest Burial Park. Although the park was newly opened and still under construction at the time of Paul’s death, Clare knew instantly that this was the place she had been seeking, Paul had a 1st class honours degree in Geography and Environmental Issues, so there was an immediate synergy between the beautiful woodland landscape, the cycle of life, and his passion for nature and the environment.

Paul’s funeral service took place at the church where he regularly worshipped and was followed by cremation. The family then held a private ceremony and Paul’s ashes were laid to rest amidst the peace and beauty of nature under a magnificent Oak tree on October 2nd 2007. Clare has since reserved her own space next to him.

Clare explains: “Epping Forest Burial Park is a stunningly unique and beautiful environment.  The mature woodland landscape is a haven for wildlife, and natural plant growth, and I know it is the perfect resting place for my brother.

“I am lucky enough to have witnessed the woodland during every season and it is this gradual, yet at the same time stark change, that makes me so happy and fulfilled each time I visit.  We always attend the events at Epping Forest Burial Park and I feel comfort that Paul is close, joining in the activities too.”

The Park provides a calendar of events throughout the year in order to encourage the woodland to be visited by the whole community, not just bereaved friends and family. Events include musical afternoons, teddy bear’s picnics for children, nature walks and special remembrance services.

For those who have suffered a bereavement, or who are making plans for their own funerals, the experience of visiting this unique place is one that is unlike any other. The committed and caring staff are always available to show visitors around and help with funeral or memorial services, and a minimum of two hours is offered for each ceremony, giving families plenty of time to honour the lives of their loved one.

Clare explains: “The service provided by the team at Epping Forest Burial Park was exceptional, and they were a great comfort to me every step of the way.  The staff always greet me with such warmth when I visit or attend an event. I rest assured that Paul is happy, in a special place that truly celebrates his short but meaningful life.”

Nick Taylor, Managing Director of Woodland Burial Parks, the company responsible for Epping Forest Burial Park, as well as two other parks in Norfolk and the Chilterns, comments: “The tranquil woodland of the park not only provides enjoyment and beauty as it changes through the seasons, but also represents the natural life cycle.  Our purpose-built buildings can be used for services, meeting places or simply quiet reflection and we can hold services of all faiths, or no faith at all.”

Virtually everything within the park is biodegradable, including all of the hand-carved wooden memorials, which return to the soil over many decades. In addition to this, all of the buildings within Epping Forest Burial Park are made from natural and sustainable materials, all combining to make this one of the most appealing and environmentally friendly places to visit – truly, a cemetery for our time.
